It is said that the one constant in fashion will always be change, and 2015 brought us endless exciting news. Peter Dundas took over with a sexy fresh start at Roberto Cavalli and Hermes announced that it had hired Nadège Vanhee-Cybulski to become their new artistic director of the elegant house. Designer Raf Simons surprised everyone with the announcement that he was leaving Dior after only three years, promising even more fashion excitement to come for 2016.
2015 was the year that Instagram “Selfie” went everywhere. The digital self portrait crossed over from your personal cell phone all the way to the runways of Milan. Dolce & Gabbana used the “selfie” for their glamorous spring/summer 2016 show featuring models walking the catwalk while taking self-portrait shots posted directly to the web in real time.
The year also broke record sales for high-end timepieces with a one-of-a-kind stainless steel Patek Philippe #5016 created for the Only Watch auction selling for over $7.2 million. Becoming the highest priced wristwatch of all time, the proceeds from the sale of the watch will help benefit Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
This year was also a time to think about sustainability and responsibility. Chopard continues to create breathtaking sustainable luxury with their ‘Fairmined' collection of ethically sourced gold and materials for their exquisite jewelry and watches. Vegetarian company Stella McCartney continues to amaze with their fabulous fashion and accessories created with materials and resources that respect animals and our planet.
2015 was the year that garment industry began questioning the unrelenting pressure of the fashion show calendar. Designers started thinking outside the box by using new platforms to help get their seasonal messages out. A fabulous highlight was Tom Ford’s head-spinning dance video featuring Lady Gaga by fashion photographer Nick Knight created as a stand-in for his spring summer 2016 runway show.
The launch of the Apple Watch had everyone contemplating the future of time and possibilities of modern wearable technology. A surprising collaboration with Hermes introduced straps and customized dials for the connected watch, making the hi-tech timepiece the must-have digital device for 2015.
We couldn’t possibly overlook our October 2015 Grand Opening hosted by the glamorous Lynn Wyatt. Kicking off a new era of Houston fashion and shopping, we are thrilled for the future of River Oaks District!
